We hope that you have all been enjoying the inaugural EKN Awards Week, in which we have already unveiled this year’s Road Racer, Young Driver and Mechanic of the Year, as well as our EKN Rising Star. We’re now getting down to crunch time with the final two awards from the 2007 season. The prestigious and hard-fought Team of the Year (ToY) honor is next up and, as always, the award is aimed at all of the team aspects of the sport. To be named as our Team of the Year requires a mix of on-track performances, team unity, and cooperation under the tent that comes with the squad conducting itself in a high level of professionalism. Making history in the EKN Awards, it is with honor that we announce that Champion Racing/Intrepid USA has become the first team to win the prestigious Team of the Year award for a second straight year.

Led by Rodney and Brett Berryhill, the Norman, Oklahoma based team performed well all season long, earning multiple race wins and two national championships. Under the Intrepid USA banner, distributors such as Leading Edge Motorsports, Checkered Flag Racing and others helped supply knowledge and success to the powerhouse team.

On track, Scott Jenkins and Devon Sandeen earned Stars of Karting national championships for the squad, ICA for the Brit and Spec Racer for the Canadian. Jenkins came across the pond on four occasions for a total of five wins in eight races in the direct drive division, earning the championship by over 50 points. Sandeen moved to the Intrepid chassis at the beginning of the year and defended his Western Division championship, going one step further with the national crown by over 100 points.

In the top level of karting in North America, three drivers ran strong for Champion Racing/Intrepid USA. Canadian Jordy Vorrath was quick all year long, earning one victory and multiple podiums. Joining the team about half-way through the year, Jan Velez-Walter was quick to adjust to Intrepid Orange, earning three podium finishes in his first four races with the team. Young driver Ryan Kinnear also stepped up his game in 2007, running among the top-10 throughout the year.

Supporting Jenkins in ICA, Tyler Dueck added two wins in competitive class, giving Champion Racing/Intrepid USA over half of the division victories, along with a couple podium runs to end up fourth in the championship chase. In Spec Racer, Rising Star nominee Joey Wimsett and the emerging Colin Katzakian combined for three victories and each finished in the top-10 in the final standings. Canadian Scott Rossi was the lone JICA driver for the team and performed well in his final year as a Junior. Rossi was in the top-six in both the East and West Division standings, ending the year seventh overall with four podiums on the year.

To earn the Team of the Year award is an honor, to receive it for a second straight year shows the commitment and determination of a team. EKN would like to congratulate Champion Racing/Intrepid USA for their successful 2007 season and the Team of the Year award.
